An advance directive is a type of written or verbal instruction about health care to be followed if a person is determined to be incapable of making decisions regarding her/his physical or mental health treatment.
Advance Directives are prepared when a person is competent and set forth instructions to be followed during periods of time when the person lacks capacity to make medical treatment decisions.
Be sure that your mental health staff have the latest information regarding the primary forms of Advance Directives.
Help your organization ensure that mental health staff of your programs understand their responsibilities, as well as the rights and responsibilities of persons who have created an advance directive.
