Governor Nominates Sharon Carpinello Mental Health Commissioner

GOVERNOR NOMINATES SHARON CARPINELLO MENTAL HEALTH COMMISSIONER
First Woman to Lead New York State's Office of Mental Health
 
Governor George E. Pataki today announced that he has nominated Sharon E. Carpinello, R.N., Ph.D., to be the next Commissioner of the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH). Dr. Carpinello has served as Acting Commissioner of the agency since July 2003.
 
''Sharon Carpinello has proven to be a strong, energetic and capable leader in the seven months she has served as Acting Commissioner, and she will do a tremendous job as OMH Commissioner,'' Governor Pataki said. ''I am confident that under her leadership, OMH will continue to incorporate cutting edge strategies and treatments, and New York will maintain its national reputation as a leader in the development and delivery of high quality mental health care.''
 
Acting Commissioner Sharon Carpinello said, ''I am very pleased and honored that Governor Pataki has nominated me to this important position. I welcome the opportunity to continue working with consumers, advocates, providers and others, toward a more effective public mental health system that provides high quality care, responds to the needs of each individual, promotes recovery, and reduces the burden of mental illness.''
 
Dr. Carpinello, who has 15 years of experience with OMH, was the agency's Executive Deputy Commissioner immediately prior to her appointment as Acting Commissioner. As Deputy Commissioner of OMH's Managed Care Division, she spearheaded the advancement of performance outcome management and data warehousing infrastructure building capacity. She has also conducted mental health services research focused in the area of self-help and recovery.
 
She is a registered nurse and holds bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing from Russell Sage College, and a Ph.D. in education from the State University of New York in Albany. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, and in 1997 received the Presidential Award for meritorious and dedicated service to advancing effectiveness of public resources available to recovering people of New York State, from the New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services. Most recently she received the Outstanding Leadership Award from the Mental Health Empowerment Project for outstanding leadership in the development of consumer-focused evidence-based practices.
 
A resident of Rensselaer County, Dr. Carpinello is married to Anthony J. Carpinello, New York State Supreme Court Justice, Appellate Court. They have two children, James, an actor who resides in Los Angeles, and Amy, a dancer who resides in New York
